A role reversal doomed the No. 22 Xavier Musketeers in their only loss of the season, against Michigan at the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Wednesday. Normally a team that avoids committing turnovers and pressures its opponent into making them, Xavier (6-1) will try to recapture its early-season winning form when it hosts South Carolina State on Sunday in Cincinnati. Through their six wins, the Musketeers had just 58 turnovers while forcing 82 by their opponents. But against the Wolverines, they lost the turnover battle 19-10 and the game 78-53. The Musketeers committed 14 turnovers in the first half and fell behind 41-30. Xavier head coach Sean Miller credited his team for typically playing an up-tempo style while avoiding mistakes, while also acknowledging that the turnover bug really bit them against the Wolverines. "We lost to a really good team; no shame in that," Miller said. "We, on top of that, didn't play well." "And that (avoiding turnovers) is something you (usually) do well? That's going to be hard to overcome against a quality team like Michigan." Leading scorer Ryan Conwell (17.6 points per game) gave the Musketeers a boost with 19 points. Zach Freemantle, second on the team at 15.4 ppg, added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Problematically, however, they also contributed to the turnover problem with three apiece. "We didn't play well enough to win the game," Miller said. "The game got out of hand. It's not like our guys quit. Their depth just continued to wear on us." The Musketeers also get 11 points and a team-high 4.4 assists per game from Dayvion McKnight. The guard had just one turnover against Michigan, but he also made just one of his eight shot attempts. Xavier may have an opportunity get right in the turnover area against the Bulldogs (4-4), who are No. 207 in the NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.11. South Carolina State is fresh off an 82-53 road loss to Marshall on Wednesday, in a game in which turnovers weren't a huge problem. But assists and made shots were hard to come by for the Bulldogs. Leading scorer Drayton Jones (12.0 ppg) again paced his team in points with 10 vs. Marshall, but the Bulldogs as a team managed just six assists and shot terribly at the 3-point (18.8 percent) and the free-throw (47.1 percent) lines. Jones is also the team's leading rebounder with 5.1 a game, but no Bulldogs player is averaging more than two assists. It's all part of the learning process for coach Erik Martin, whose first team went 5-26 in 2022-23. The Bulldogs improved to 14-18 last season, including 9-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. "The only way you can grow sometimes is by failure or by struggling," Martin said this offseason. "You have to fail in order to learn how to deal with failure and move on and become the person you're supposed to be." --Field Level MediaWade Taylor IV scored 15 points and dished out 10 assists and C.J. Wilcher added 14 points as No. 13 Texas A&M throttled Abilene Christian 92-54 on Saturday afternoon in College Station, Texas. The Aggies (11-2) were in charge from the jump, forging a 19-point lead at halftime and never looking back. Texas A&M scored the first points of the second half, was up by 28 with 13:23 to play and cruised to the finish line while winning its seventh straight game. Taylor's output moved him into second place in the Aggies all-time scoring list. His 1,779 points are now behind only Bernard King, who had 1,990 from 1999-2003. Andersson Garcia and Zhuric Phelps added 12 points each for Texas A&M, which appears to be hitting on all cylinders heading into its Southeastern Conference opener at home against rival Texas on Jan. 4. Phelps added 10 rebounds for the Aggies. Quion Williams led the Wildcats (8-6) with 14 points. Abilene Christian missed its final six shots and went the last 5:24 of the game without a point. The Aggies made a statement in the early going by scoring the game's first nine points over the initial 3 1/2 minutes, with seven of those coming from Coleman. Abilene Christian fought back to within 16-12 after Dontrez Williams' layup with 12:12 left in the half. But A&M swung back, producing a 14-0 run capped by Garcia's layup with 8:51 to play in the half to pull away to a 30-12 advantage. The Wildcats again cut into their deficit, pulling to 30-19 when Cade Hornecker hit a layup with 6:26 to play until halftime. A&M boosted the lead back to 17 points after a pair of free throws by Taylor and got two more from the charity stripe to take a 48-29 edge to the break. Wilcher led all scorers in the half with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc while Garcia hit for 10 points for A&M while making all four of his shots from the floor. The Aggies outshot Abilene Christian 61.5 percent to 40.7 percent before halftime. Quion Williams and Leonardo Bettiol paced the Wildcats with seven points each in the first half. --Field Level Media

By MICHELLE L. PRICE NEW YORK (AP) — Chad Chronister, Donald Trump’s pick to run the Drug Enforcement Administration, said Tuesday he was withdrawing his name from consideration, becoming the second person selected by the president-elect to bow out quickly after being nominated for a position requiring Senate confirmation. Sheriff Chronister, the top law enforcement officer in Hillsborough County, Florida, said in a post on X that he was backing away from the opportunity, which he called “the honor of a lifetime.” “Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration,” Chronister wrote. He did not elaborate, and Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Chronister follows former Republican congressman Matt Gaetz , Trump’s first pick to serve as attorney general, in withdrawing his name for a post in the administration. Gaetz withdrew following scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. Trump’s pick of Chronister for the DEA job drew backlash from conservatives, who raised concerns over his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and his saying that his office “does not engage in federal immigration enforcement activities.” In March 2020, Chronister arrested the pastor of a megachurch who held services with hundreds of people and violated a safer-at-home order in place aimed at limiting the spread of the Covid virus. “Shame on this pastor, their legal staff and the leaders of this staff for forcing us to do our job. That’s not what we wanted to do during a declared state of emergency,” Chronister said at the time. “We are hopeful that this will be a wakeup call.” U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky, was among those airing public complaints, saying Chronister should be “disqualified” for the arrest. Others flagged comments Chronister made in a video about Florida’s immigration laws that he released in 2023 that circulated again online after Trump named him last weekend. We do not target individuals based on their immigration status. That’s the authority of federal agencies.” Trump has made a sweeping crackdown on immigration a central focus of his campaign and his aims for his coming administration. Orioles to non-tender reliever Jacob Webb; decisions loom ahead of deadlineCHENNAI: Nobody had any right to dictate how a woman should live; it is her life, her body, and her choice, said the Madras High Court, while hearing a batch of petitions in connection with the sexual assault of a student of Anna University . While the accused in the heinous crime is a roadside biryani vendor, the court said the people and society were responsible for victimising women, which was the root cause of sexual crimes. “It is never the fault of the woman; it has always been the society, which has dictated her life. She should rise above these societal stigmas and judgements,” said a vacation bench of Justices SM Subramaniam and V Lakshminarayanan on Saturday. Noting how the FIR was circulated, which is against the law, and the social media was conducting a trial blaming the survivor for being out with her friend, the bench said the society should feel ashamed for shaming a woman in this manner. “Societal stigma is paving ways for crimes against women, as the perpetrators find shelter in victim-blaming and shaming,” the court said. It wholeheartedly appreciated the courage of the survivor for coming forward to report the crime. "Unless victims come forward to report, the perpetrators will continue with committing such crimes," the judges noted. Terming the language used in the FIR as deplorable, the bench said, "The language employed in the FIR is shocking, as it is more a case of victim blaming. It is the duty of the police officials to assist the [survivor] by employing a language which does not infringe her right to dignity.” During the hearing, Advocate General (AG) PS Raman vehemently criticised the media for revealing the identity of the survivor. "Media also holds social responsibility. If the FIR leaked as claimed, the media should pull up the government for the lapse rather than publishing it,” he said, adding that action would be taken as per cyber rules against the 13 individuals who accessed the FIR from the web portal. On December 23, the accused, Gnanasekaran videographed the girl and her boyfriend at an isolated place inside the university campus. Using that, he threatened the girl saying he would release the video that would bring her shame. Later, he sexually assaulted her and captured that too on camera to blackmail her into meeting him whenever he called. However, the woman did not succumb to the threat and instead lodged a complaint. Your kid’s teachers are not the enemy. How to handle the parent-teacher conferenceA new story posted by a daily newspaper on social media mentioned that a bull elephant which is on Musth attacked humans in Tanai of Kachin State on 9 December, leaving four women dead and seven others injured. Another story stated that Hmawby and Taikkyi townships are preparing to build electric fences at agricultural farms and in villages of both townships to prevent the danger of elephant herds roaming in forest reserves close to the Bago Mountain range. In the areas, some 30 wild elephants wander jungle areas as well as rural areas. Conflicts between humans and animals, especially wild elephants are based on the loss of habitats for wild animals. It depends on the expansion of industrial and urban areas as well as agricultural farms, gradual deforestation, scarcity of feedstuff and emission of human societies’ smoke inappropriate for habitation of wildlife. Roaming of wild animals is to unintentionally search feedstuff in these areas beyond the jungles. Hence, humans need to consider how to provide feedstuff and habitat for wild animals. As the population of the country is growing year by year, it is necessary to establish residences for the people. In this regard, the reclamation of agricultural farms and residential areas needs to implement a win-win initiative between human society and wild animals. Even if authorities expand residential areas including lands for industries, public areas and agriculture and livestock farms, wild animals have the right to possess sufficient habitats suitable for their nature. Currently, the government designates forest reserves, protected public forests, protected forests, natural areas, wildlife sanctuaries and so on across the nation to create a safe natural environment for wild animals. Moreover, relevant laws have been enacted to protect these wild animals to take action against those who commit illegal hunting, smuggling forest products, destroying forest areas and illegally settling. Especially, these forests must be reliable and appropriate habitats for wildlife. If so, flora and fauna diversities can be conserved in the country for a long time. If wild animals have sufficient and safe habitats, conflicts between humans and wild animals will decline. A harmonious environment can improve the nature of wild animals as well as ecosystem of the human society. Consequently, agricultural and livestock farms will achieve success in supplying products to society. Hatching rare species of animals and protecting critically endangered species can improve the natural environment which will benefit living beings and non-living beings.
