NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma appears to have borrowed from the past to cure its recent offensive ills. The Sooners , best known this century for a passing prowess that has produced four Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, took it back to the 20th century against then-No. 7 Alabama. Oklahoma ran 50 times for 257 yards while only throwing 12 times in a 24-3 win over the Crimson Tide that took coach Brent Venables off the hot seat. The Sooners more resembled Barry Switzer’s squads that dominated the old Big 8 with the wishbone offense in the 1970s and ’80s than the more recent Air Raid teams. Venables said the change was a matter of necessity for a unit that has been besieged by injuries at receiver and offensive line. “I think this staff has done a really good job with trying to figure that out, get better every week, put together a great gameplan but also figure out, ‘OK, what does this group of guys, what does this team — what do we need to do?'” Venables said. To make it work, Oklahoma needed to trust that such a change would work in the modern Southeastern Conference. They had to implement it with an interim play-caller in Joe Jon Finley, who stepped in after the Sooners fired Seth Littrell last month. Oklahoma (6-5, 2-5 SEC) pulled it off, and LSU coach Brian Kelly has taken notice ahead of their game on Saturday. “This is now much more about controlling the football, running the football, playing with physicality," Kelly said. "They've got perimeter skill, but I think it's centered around much more of a run-centric, quarterback run and take care of the football." The Sooners started to see success on the ground against Maine. They ran 52 times for 381 yards in a 59-14 win that got the wheels turning. Jovantae Barnes ran for career highs of 203 yards and three touchdowns that day. Venables said the timing of the opportunity to play that non-conference game against Maine in early November and figure some things out was perfect. “Everybody has some degree of vulnerability and maybe some self-doubt,” he said. “And just developing some confidence and putting something on tape other than practice, like, ‘Man, look, see what you’re capable of?’ And executing against, again, a well-coached team — certainly, we played off of that in all the right ways like you would expect us to. And so there’s a real place for that.” After a bye week, the Sooners tried the same approach against Missouri. It wasn't as successful — they ran 36 times for 122 yards — but they hung tough before losing 30-23 . The Sooners went all in against Alabama. Jackson Arnold — the same guy who threw 45 times in the Alamo Bowl last year, ran 25 times for 131 yards and threw just 11 passes. The Sooners found something in running back Xavier Robinson. With Barnes out with an injury, Robinson carried 18 times for career highs of 107 yards and two touchdowns. Suddenly, a team that had been forcing the pass and getting sacked at an alarming rate was moving the line of scrimmage and controlling the tempo. Oklahoma had the ball for more than 34 minutes against the Crimson Tide, lending support to a talented defense that had been spending way too much time on the field. The new approach could be helpful on Saturday — LSU (7-4, 4-3) ranks 14th out of 16 conference teams against the run. Venables said the Sooners still need to throw the ball well to win, but he's glad to know his squad can run with force when necessary. “I think that’s the art of having a system that’s adjustable, flexible, adaptable, week in and week out, but also has an identity — toughness, physicality," he said. "You’ve got to be able to run the ball at every level of football, but you do have to throw it. You can’t just do one thing. But we need to be efficient.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . Recap: 16th-ranked CU Buffs dominated by sizzling KansasMontreal’s police chief said he expects more arrests stemming from a Friday anti-NATO protest that turned violent, while one of the protest organizers on Sunday denounced political reaction as hijacking the underlying message of the demonstration. Uniformed police officers could be seen Sunday both inside and outside Montreal’s Palais des congres convention centre as the annual meeting continued with no signs of demonstrations, although some protesters had planned a “counter-summit” at a community centre just north of downtown. Chief Fady Dagher told reporters on Saturday that more arrests would be coming thanks to additional evidence gathered during the protests, adding that police were aware of who was behind the vandalism including smashed windows and burned cars as well as alleged assaults on police officers. Police said that during the march, smoke bombs were deployed, metal barriers were thrown into the street and windows smashed of nearby businesses and the convention centre where delegates from NATO parliamentary assembly, including members and partner states, gathered for a session set to wrap Monday. Among the issues being broached were support for Ukraine, climate change and the future of the alliance. Dagher estimated that about 800 people took part in protests from several groups, but about 20 to 40 people were allegedly responsible for the trouble. “I do not want to advertise these groups and glorify these groups, it is a big trap to do so,” Dagher said. “But I can assure to you ... it is a few groups.” Montreal police arrested three people following Friday’s demonstration — a 22-year-old woman who was arrested for allegedly obstructing police work and assaulting a police officer and two men, 22 and 28, also each facing a charge for allegedly obstructing police work. All are scheduled to appear in court at a later date. “Despite what you saw in the images, last-minute impromptu events are extremely difficult to anticipate,” Dagher added. “We have other pieces of evidence. So probably we will have other arrests.” Friday night’s protest was condemned by politicians of all stripes Saturday as acts of antisemitism, which one organizer rejected, saying the protests were against the actions of the state of Israel and not Jewish people. On Sunday, the Divest for Palestine Collective denounced what it called “dishonest attempts” of politicians to hijack the “anti-militarist, anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist messages” delivered by protesters. In an emailed statement, it refuted allegations of antisemitism. “These are false accusations aimed at delegitimizing the solidarity movement for the liberation of Palestine and undermining the fight against antisemitism,” the group wrote. The group defended setting ablaze a doll representing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the protest. Earlier this week, the International Court of Justice issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu as well as his former defence minister and Hamas members. “It is a legitimate expression of collective anger against the political indifference at the heart of an ongoing colonial genocide,” the collective said. The collective also denounced what it called police violence against demonstrators, saying at least four protesters had to be taken to hospital with various injuries. Dagher said he could not make a firm link between Friday’s acts and antisemitism, but added that since the Oct. 7 attacks more than one year ago, incidents and acts of antisemitism and Islamophobia have both increased enormously in the city. The police chief however, defended his officers handling of Friday’s event, which he felt could have been much worse. He added he would spend the rest of the weekend with his officers on the ground to lend support.
Marc Cohen Promoted to Managing Director; Leads Business Strategy and InnovationOTTAWA — Peter Anholt tried to keep things light as he emerged from one of the elevators at Canada's hotel. The temperature had been turned way up on the veteran hockey executive and the country's under-20 program after a stunning upset some 12 hours earlier. "You only want to talk to me when things are bad, eh?" Anholt joked to reporters Saturday morning. "Is that how this works?" That is indeed what happens when a powerhouse with a record 20 gold medals expected to roll over an opponent suffers one of its worst all-time defeats at the tournament. Canada was embarrassed on home soil 3-2 by Latvia — a country it had thumped by a combined 41-4 score across four previous meetings — in a shocking shootout Friday. Coming off a disastrous fifth-place finish last year in Sweden and having talked a lot about upping their compete level and preparation, the Canadians looked disjointed for long stretches against the plucky, hard-working Latvians. The power play finally clicked late in the third period, but stands at 1-for-7 through two games, while the top line of Easton Cowan, Calum Ritchie and Bradly Nadeau has yet to translate its pre-tournament chemistry into success in the spotlight. "We're certainly trying to problem solve, but not throw the baby out with the bath water," said Anholt, who heads the world junior setup. "We've got to be really careful." Canada, which picked up a solid 4-0 victory over Finland to open its tournament Thursday, had plenty of offensive zone time and directed 57 shots at Latvian goaltender Linards Feldbergs. Included in that total, however, were far too many one-and-done efforts from the perimeter with little traffic in front. There were, of course, desperate spurts — especially late in regulation and in 3-on-3 overtime — but not nearly enough for a roster peppered with first-round NHL draft picks and top prospects. "We played really, really hard," Anholt said in defending his players. "We controlled the puck lots. We created some chances. Their goalie was really good and they defended really good ... 99 times out of 100 we win that game." Hoping for a big response Sunday against Germany before meeting the United States on New Year's Eve to tie a bow on round-robin action in Group A, Canada will have to push ahead minus one of its best players. Star defenceman Matthew Schaefer was injured Friday and is done for the tournament after he slammed into Latvia's net and skated off favouring his left shoulder area. "Tough blow for the kid," Anholt said. "The way he plays the game, he plays it at such a high speed." Cowan, a Toronto Maple Leafs first-round selection, said Canada remains confident despite Friday's ugly result in the nation's capital. "We're good," said the 19-year-old from Mount Brydges, Ont. "Everyone's lost a hockey game before." But not like that — or to that opponent on that stage. "Bit of a (crappy) feeling," said Nadeau, a Carolina Hurricanes prospect from St-Francois-de-Madawaska, N.B. "We all know what this group is capable of. Losing that game is not our standard. "We'll bounce back." Some corners of social media exploded following the Latvian debacle, with heavy criticism directed at head coach Dave Cameron and the team's overall roster construction. "We're not really worried about it," defenceman and Ottawa native Oliver Book, who like Cowan is back from last year's team, said of the outside noise. "We know we didn't play well." Canada appears poised to mix things up against the Germans. Vancouver Canucks prospect Sawyer Mynio of Kamloops, B.C., is set draw in for Schaefer, while Anholt indicated there's a good chance forward Carson Rehkopf will get his first crack at the 2025 tournament as a returnee. The 19-year-old Seattle Kraken second-round pick from Vaughan, Ont., has scored a combined 78 goals over his last 97 regular-season and playoff games in the Ontario Hockey League. "Great player," Cowan said. "He finds ways." Anholt said taking a big-picture approach is key in challenging moments. "Let's not panic," he said. "The world hasn't fallen in. It's hard, but we'll learn from it." It's something Canada will have to do under intense scrutiny. "People are gonna love you and people are gonna hate you," said Cowan, who has a goal an assist through two games. "Gotta keep doing you." Anholt, who was also at the helm 12 months ago when Canada never got in gear, isn't getting 2024 vibes from this year's group. "Not even in any way, shape or form," he said. "We've just got to take care of business." They get a first shot at redemption Sunday. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 28, 2024. Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press
‘Gossip Girl’ star Chanel Maya takes legal action against family Chanel Maya Banks responds to family reporting her ‘missing’ Chanel Maya Banks has decided to take legal action against her family after they reported her missing a month before. The 36-year-old actress filed a restraining order against her mother and cousin on Thursday after they filed a missing person’s report, as per Us Weekly. The Gossip Girl alum was revealed to have been found by Texas police just hours after the family had filed the report. Banks has since been active on social media to clarify that she was indeed “not missing.” In addition to the restraining order against her mother and cousin, she also filed a civil harassment order against them. The legal documents Banks filed, claimed that both her mother and cousin “acted together to harass and spread lies” in order to destroy her “credibility” and career. The actress went on to accuse the pair for manufacturing the report last month and claimed that they accused her husband, Carlos, of murdering her. “They orchestrated this scheme in order to humiliate me publicly and ruin my professional acting career,” she further added. Banks claimed that her mother and cousin had broken in and “burglarized” her house on November 20, while she had been away, alleging that they stole her husband's work badge and placed an Apple AirTag on her vehicle in order to follow her whereabouts. This comes after the star attempted to cut her family off in October, accusing them of assaulting her husband and causing “visible injuries on his face and neck.” Dani Dyer, Jarrod Bowen set to reveal biggest exciting news Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce spotted on double date with close friends Justin Bieber hints at struggles with faith amid Sean Diddy drama Rihanna lights up NYC streets with sparkling glamAre Blanket Pardons for Officials on Donald Trump’s Target List a Good Idea?
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Cade Klubnik threw for three touchdowns, backup running back Jay Haynes scored twice on the ground and defensive tackle Payton Page had a 57-yard pick-6 score as No. 17 Clemson routed The Citadel 51-14 Saturday to move to 39-0 all-time against FCS opponents. The Tigers (9-2) won their third straight and still held on to feint hopes of reaching the Atlantic Coast Conference title game and the College Football Playoff. Clemson, which finished ACC play at 7-1 with last week's 24-20 win at Pittsburgh, needs No. 11 Miami to lose at Syracuse next week to play for a league crown for the eighth time in 10 seasons. Clemson cranked it up early in this one, looking a lot like the offense that averaged better than 48 points during a six-game win streak earlier this season instead of the one that had not surpassed 24 points in any of its past three contests. Klubnik connected with Antonio Williams for a 30-yard TD to start the scoring and then the 315-pound Page stretched out for an interception and rumbled along the left sidelines — losing momentum with each step — for Clemson's first score from a defensive lineman in four years and a 14-0 lead. And Page wasn't the only defender to score. Clemson's All-American linebacker Barrett Carter playing his next-to-last home game, had a 4-yard TD run on Senior Day to end the Tigers' scoring. The Citadel (5-7), of the FCS Southern Conference, went on to its 19th straight loss to Clemson since 1932. Klubnik completed 12 of 16 passes for 198 yards. He headed to the sidelines after his second TD pass to Williams that gave the Tigers a 42-0 lead in the third quarter. Haynes got the bulk of the work after starter Phil Mafah achieved his 1,000-yard rushing season with three first-quarter runs. Haynes had scoring runs of 70 and 9 yards. The Citadel: The Bulldogs are the leaders among FCS teams in victories over FBS opponents with nine since the college football split into Division I and Division I-AA in 1978. They couldn't stay competitive, but did roll up a season-high 288 yards rushing and scored a touchdown against Clemson for the first time in the past four games in the series. Clemson: The Tigers reached nine wins in a season for the 14th-straight time. Only Alabama, which entered the season with 16 straight nine-win seasons, had a longer current streak. The Citadel's season is complete. Clemson closes the regular season with its rivalry game with South Carolina on Saturday. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. The stunning price tag of Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek’s Dubai villaTopline TikTok asked the Supreme Court to take up its case challenging the federal government’s ban on the app Monday, as the popular social media company faces a last-minute scramble to preserve access to the app before the law—which bans TikTok unless it’s sold to a new company—takes effect next month, after a lower court upheld the law . Key Facts What To Watch For TikTok asked the Supreme Court to rule on its request to pause the law by Jan. 6, before the law is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 19. If there’s no ruling by Jan. 6, TikTok requested the Supreme Court issue an order that temporarily blocks the law to ensure the law won’t take effect while the court is deliberating. Crucial Quote “If Americans, duly informed of the alleged risks of ‘covert’ content manipulation, choose to continue viewing content on TikTok with their eyes wide open, the First Amendment entrusts them with making that choice, free from the Government’s censorship,” TikTok argued in its filing at the Supreme Court, claiming if the law is upheld, “Congress will have free rein to ban any American from speaking simply by identifying some risk that the speech is influenced by a foreign entity.” What Happens If Tiktok Ban Takes Effect? If the TikTok ban is allowed to take effect—either on Jan. 19 or later—it would mean Apple and Google would no longer host TikTok in their app stores, so users would not be able to download TikTok or update the app. The law also prohibits internet service providers from enabling TikTok’s “distribution, maintenance, or updating,” which would likely affect companies like Oracle, which hosts TikTok’s U.S. user data. TikTok has argued that provision of the law would mean companies could no longer “provid[e] the services that enable the TikTok platform to function, effectively shutting down TikTok in the United States.” The legislation does allow TikTok to keep operating if it separates itself from ByteDance, though TikTok has not yet announced any plans to do so and claimed ByteDance divesting from TikTok is “not possible technologically, commercially, or legally.” Can Trump Stop The Tiktok Ban? President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration is reportedly interested in “halting” the TikTok ban, but Trump has not yet announced any concrete commitment to doing so or suggested how he could oppose a ban. “We’ll take a look at TikTok,” Trump said at a press conference Monday, adding he has a “warm spot in my heart for TikTok” given his popularity with youth on the app. CNN reports Trump then met with TikTok CEO Shou Chew at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday after his press conference, but there are no reports on what the two discussed. It’s still unclear how Trump could oppose a ban, though legal experts have suggested the most viable way would be to negotiate a solution with TikTok that allows Trump to say the company is in compliance with the law, whether it has fully separated itself from ByteDance or not. James Lewis, director of the Strategic Technologies Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told NPR that China may be more willing to approve a sale of TikTok to an American owner if Trump backs off his threat of high tariffs on Chinese imports in exchange. Surprising Fact If the ban were to take effect and prohibit U.S. internet service providers from hosting TikTok’s user data, that could mean all of that personal data would be moved to China . Forbes reported in 2023 that’s what happened when the app shut down operations in India, with an unnamed TikTok employee saying, they “don’t think [Indians are] Key Background The TikTok ban was signed into law with bipartisan support after the app had long raised concerns among lawmakers, who banned the app from government devices before moving to outlaw it in the U.S. entirely. TikTok has consistently denied any wrongdoing or links to the Chinese government, though Forbes has reported on numerous concerns involving the app, including including TikTok spying on journalists , tracking “sensitive” words , promoting Chinese propaganda criticizing U.S. politicians and mishandling user data . The D.C. Circuit upheld the law in December after TikTok and individual creators on the app sued to overturn the ban, with a panel of judges backing the government’s assessment that banning it was necessary for national security. The judges were not sympathetic to TikTok’s First Amendment claims, arguing that the government wasn’t censoring any content on the app since it can all stay up if ByteDance just divests from TikTok and the law’s “divest-or-be-banned” approach is actually the least restrictive way to deal with the government’s security concerns. The appeals court then ruled Friday that TikTok’s request to temporarily block the law while the company goes to the Supreme Court was “unwarranted,” noting the company still has time to go to the high court before the law takes effect and striking down TikTok’s claims that pausing the ban is necessary to preserve the company’s First Amendment rights, since the court already ruled that the law does not violate those rights. More snow is coming to Fairbanks starting Sunday, the National Weather Service weather forecast on Friday. The greater Fairbanks area could see an average of six or seven inches of snow, said Fairbanks meteorologist Andrew Stokes. "The east side will get a little more than the west side," Stokes said. "We will see a decent bit of snow, so breaking out snow shovels is a good idea." Unlike the recent small amount of snow the area received between Wednesday night and Friday morning, the three-day system won't include an adhesive-like freezing mix. "We are expecting this to be 100% snow, more normal snow," Stokes said on Friday. "It will be fairly typical for our area, it won't be super fluffy or super wet." Stokes said the snow is driven by a low-pressure system from the Bering Sea heading toward the Seward Peninsula. Temperature highs from Sunday through Tuesday will be in the mid-teens to low 20s. Lows are expected to be in the teens on Sunday night, below 10 degrees on Monday before dipping back to near-zero on Tuesday night. The last snow system that passed through the Fairbanks area brought a wintry mix of freezing drizzle and about an inch of snow. "The moisture that we were dealing with for this event was just above this temperature, making it difficult for snow to form, leading to widespread freezing drizzle," the National Weather Service stated via social media. "This mostly led to a thicker coat of frost on cars and a crunchy coating on snow.
Elon Musk defended his support for Germany's far-right AfD party in an opinion piece in the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Saturday, prompting a senior editor to resign. The world's richest man doubled down on his comments from December 20 that "only the AfD can save Germany", writing that the anti-immigration AfD was the "last ray of hope for the country" at the "brink of cultural and economic collapse". Despite various branches of the AfD being labelled "extremist" by Germany's domestic security agency, Musk said the AfD's classification as far-right was "clearly false" as party leader Alice Weidel "has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka". With Musk set to play a key role in US President-elect Donald Trump's administration, the billionaire's interventions have triggered accusations of meddling in Germany's democracy. The country is set to head to the polls on February 23, with the AfD polling at around 19 percent of the vote. Musk's guest opinion piece in the Welt am Sonntag provoked outraged reactions and the resignation of the conservative title's opinion editor. "Today a piece by Elon Musk appeared in the Welt am Sonntag. Yesterday I handed in my resignation after it went to print," Eva Marie Kogel wrote on the social media platform Musk owns. Meanwhile the Greens' campaign director Andreas Audretsch wrote: "We must not allow the Elon Musks of this world, the Chinese state or Russian troll factories to undermine our democracies in Europe." The Association of German Journalists (DJV) protested against the "election advertising" allowed by the newspaper's editorial staff. "The German media must not allow itself to be manipulated into acting as a mouthpiece for autocrats and their friends," said DJV leader Mika Beuster. Even the Welt's new editor-in-chief Jan Philipp Burgard was compelled to disagree with Musk in the opinion piece, writing: "Even a genius can be wrong". Arguing that the AfD "is a danger to our values and our economy", Burgard pointed out that Bjoern Hoecke, the AfD's leader in Thuringia state, "has been convicted several times for using a banned Nazi slogan". Die Welt belongs to Axel Springer, Germany's most influential press group. Its lineup includes the Bild tabloid, the country's most-read newspaper. Chamber of Commerce sees new US export crackdown on China, email saysGov. Gavin Newsom’s decree that by 2035 all new cars sold in California must be powered by batteries or other zero-emission systems has received a double dose of legal and political support. Last Friday the U.S. Supreme Court blocked an effort by politically “red” states to declare California’s zero-emission mandate unconstitutional. And on Wednesday the outgoing Biden administration’s Environmental Protection Agency granted the state’s request for a new waiver , which it needs to deviate from federal emission standards. Renewal of the waiver makes it more difficult for President-elect Donald Trump to make good on his campaign promise to block California’s 2035 decree, a major chunk of the state’s effort to become carbon-neutral by 2045. “Clean cars are here to stay,” Newsom said in a statement . “The Biden-Harris administration reaffirmed what we’ve known for decades — California can rise to the challenge of protecting our people by cleaning our air and cutting pollution. “With more makes and models available than ever before, millions of Californians have already made the switch to clean cars. Automakers and manufacturers have made it clear they intend to stick with California and consumers as we move toward clean cars that save people money. “Naysayers like President-elect Trump would prefer to side with the oil industry over consumers and American automakers, but California will continue fostering new innovations in the market.” Newsom’s celebratory statement and political dig notwithstanding, whether California actually enforces the ban on selling gasoline- and diesel-powered cars in 2035 remains legally, politically and tactically unsettled. While the Supreme Court didn’t allow Ohio and other states to pursue their case against California, it left open a challenge by fuel manufacturers, who contend that the state’s Clean Air Act waiver doesn’t empower it to ban sales of cars with internal combustion engines. The court will take up that issue next year. Despite the EPA action, it’s likely that after taking office, Trump will attempt to cancel it, either directly or through legislation from a Congress with Republican majorities in both houses. Assuming that California’s mandate survives those potential roadblocks, there’s still the matter of escalating the sales of battery- and hydrogen- powered cars, plus plug-in hybrids, from their 39.4% of auto purchases so far this year to 100%. There are about 13 million cars on the road in California; about 2 million meet the state’s definition of zero-emission now. Californians purchase between 1.7 million and 2 million new vehicles each year. After surges in recent years, sales of ZEVs, as they are dubbed, have recently flattened out. Trump has pledged to eliminate the $7,500 federal tax credit for zero-emission vehicle purchases, but Newsom has promised to keep it going with state funds. Moreover, even if only zero-emission vehicles can be sold after 2035, there will still be millions of gas- and diesel-fueled cars on the road. And the state faces a balancing act of maintaining the availability of fuel for those cars as it indirectly compels refineries to reduce their output, perhaps to the point of closure. Finally, California must generate enough electricity to recharge the many millions of zero-emission vehicles it envisions, while at the same time shifting to zero-emission power production from wind and solar arrays, backed up by massive battery banks. With all of those factors in flux, there’s precious little wiggle room if the state is to achieve its 2035 goal.
