The firm was recently awarded a Colorado Advanced Industries grant for $249,968 and a USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Phase II grant for $650,000 that will fund further research and development on their innovative design. The Advanced Industries grant was only awarded to 38% of applicants and the SBIR Phase II grant was awarded to 42% of applicants but those applicants were required to have already been awarded the Phase I grant previously which only had an award rate of 15%. Applicants across the country include research institutions and universities but do not typically include small-town engineering firms. Effective detention and water quality treatment is an important part of protecting our environment, ourselves, and our neighbors downstream, and we believe this innovation has the potential to greatly impact water conservation in all communities. The headgate allows for a constant flow of water for a wide range of headwater depths and doesn’t use electricity. This means that water users pulling water from Colorado’s overallocated streams don’t have to manually adjust their headgates to receive their full water rights, as stream depths often fluctuate during the day. Additionally, water commissioners will spend less time chasing down water users when they’re unknowingly using too much water.
